Hollywood history. Beyond inferring a quest to retell a particular moment or chapter in cinema history, it can also address the rather egregious practice manifestly found in Hollywood of simply tossing-out historical documentation and records of what actually transpired. (The most recent example: Technicolor tossing their original corporate minutes from 1915.) On the other hand, there are those intrepid souls willing to get their hands dirty by literally climbing into a dumpster to save those artifacts of Hollywood history for future generations. One such individual is my old friend Marc Wanamaker who created the Bison Archive in the early 1970s. I\u2019ve known Marc most of my life. In early 2024, I encountered a bit of levity when my attention was drawn to a curious mention of Technicolor from the mid-1950s found within the January 29th\u00a0issue of The New Yorker Magazine\u00a0that ran a book review about the CIA \u2013 the review was written by critic Margaret Talbot in which she recounted an early and somewhat remarkable moment in American television history: the 1957 CBS\u00a0broadcast of an acid test &#8230;50s television at its strangest. Under the clinical guidance of famed UCLA psychiatrist, Dr. Sidney Cohen, a young female subject was dosed, knowingly, with a hit of LSD 25. The audience that night was comprised mostly of actors, and most prominently actor-dancer extraordinaire Maurice Hines &#8212; everyone packed-into a small (12 seats) grading theatre on the first floor.\u00a0 The film being shown was the fully restored\u00a0The Cotton Club, featuring performances from Hines and his brother, Gregory.\u00a0In the film, they played competitive brothers, two dance master\u2019s that performed at the famed nightclub in New York City, a club that was a nexus for entertainers and gangsters in equal measure.
